01Start with what the website has to do

Start with what the website has to do

Before colours or pages, write down the one or two things the website must achieve. Bring in enquiries on WhatsApp, sell products online, show export buyers a catalogue, or let parents find admission details. Every later decision follows from this.

Then list who it is for: local customers searching on their phones, buyers abroad comparing suppliers, or patients looking for timings. A website built for its real visitors does far more than one built to look impressive.

02What to prepare before you call anyone

What to prepare before you call anyone

  1. 01Your business detailsName, address, phone, WhatsApp, timings and the areas you serve, written exactly the same way everywhere.
  2. 02PhotosReal photos of your work, products, shop or team. Phone photos in good daylight are better than stock images.
  3. 03The wordsA few lines about the business, each service or product, and the questions customers ask most. A designer can help write the rest.
  4. 04Examples you likeTwo or three websites you like, and why. It saves a lot of back and forth.
03Domain, hosting and email

Domain, hosting and email

The domain is your address, such as yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com. Register it in your own name with a registrar you can log in to, so it always belongs to you.

Hosting is where the website lives. A small, fast site costs very little to host. Business email such as you@yourbusiness.in is set up separately, usually through Google Workspace or Zoho.

ThingWhat to check
DomainRegistered in your name, with the login details in your hands
HostingFast in India, with SSL (the padlock) included
EmailOn your own domain, not a free address
CodeHanded over to you once the project is paid for
04Choosing who builds it

Choosing who builds it

You can use a website builder like Wix or Shopify yourself, hire an agency, or work with a freelance designer and developer. Builders are quick to start but charge monthly and are harder to rank. Agencies cost more and pass work between people. A freelancer who designs and codes keeps it in one pair of hands.

05Questions to ask before you pay

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. 01Is it built from scratch or from a template? Both can work, but you should know which one you are paying for.
  2. 02Will I own the domain, hosting and code? The answer should be yes.
  3. 03How fast will it load on a phone?Ask to see a past site tested on Google PageSpeed Insights.
  4. 04What is included for Google?Page titles, structured data, a sitemap, Search Console and help with your Google Business Profile.
  5. 05What does it cost after launch?Domain, hosting and email every year, and how changes are charged.
06After the website goes live

After the website goes live

  1. 01Submit it to Google

Add the site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap, so Google finds every page.

  2. 02Set up your Google Business Profile

Link it to the website. This is what puts you on Google Maps for searches nearby.

  3. 03Ask customers for reviews

Reviews on your Google Business Profile are one of the strongest local signals.

  4. 04Keep it current

Add new work, products and answers to common questions. Pages that stay useful keep ranking.

07Questions

Questions people actually ask

01How do I get a website made for my business?

Decide what the website has to do, prepare your business details, photos and a few lines of text, register a domain in your own name, then choose a website builder, an agency or a freelance designer and get a written quote before work starts.

02How long does it take to make a website?

A landing page usually takes one to two weeks, a business website two to four weeks, and an online store or catalogue four to eight weeks, depending on how ready the content is.

No. A designer and developer handles the building. You only need to explain the business and approve the design.

04Can I get a website made remotely?

Yes. Projects can run entirely over calls, WhatsApp and email, with a live preview link to follow the work from anywhere in India.

05How will customers find my website on Google?

Through a fast, well-structured site submitted to Google Search Console, a Google Business Profile linked to it, customer reviews, and links from directories and other sites.
