Upside Sound

A personal experiment.
Turns your personality into a music profile.
Upside Sound is a music recommender with a Stranger Things mood. Instead of asking what you like, it asks questions like “after a long, strange week, what actually refills you?”, reads your answers, and matches your personality to songs. It also tells you which character you resemble.
Everything runs in your browser. There is no account, no server and no API key.
- 01
Questions that adapt
A bank of 84 questions is used in a different order each session, picking the next one that will teach the engine the most about you.
- 02
Answers become traits
The text of each answer is analysed, including negation and intensity (“I don’t really…” versus “I absolutely…”), and scored on five traits: idealism, pragmatism, intensity, introspection and sociability.
- 03
Traits are matched to songs
Your five scores become a profile, which is compared with the same five numbers stored for every song, using cosine and euclidean distance.
- 04
A varied playlist
The best matches are re-ranked so the “more like this” list is not ten near-identical songs, and each result links to Spotify.
Song scores are my own judgement, so treat the results as a playful reading rather than science.
